Shipping to New Zealand – What can I take with me?

Emigrating to a new country is always a big project with many potential pitfalls and regulations, and moving to New Zealand is no exception. As with any move abroad, different forms, documents, and customs regulations need to be adhered to, meaning some of your possessions may need to be left behind.

Personal and household effects can be imported free of duty or tax in several instances:

  • You are a first time migrant holding permanent residency status
  • You are a “work to residence” visa holder
  • You hold a work permit for more than 12 months
  • You are a New Zealand Resident returning from an overseas absence of more than 21 months

Consignments will be checked at random by The New Zealand Quarantine Service to look for items such as cane ware, rattan ware, and basket ware that may require treatment or fumigation. Shoes, boots and garden tools may also require cleaning in case they have come into contact with soil or vegetation. Other items that may require fumigation or cleaning include: garden furniture, golf clubs, cricket bats, camping gear, and any other form of sports equipment.

Importing motor vehicles is also duty free if you fit the criteria listed above. If you do not qualify for concessionary entry, private motor vehicles and aircraft will attract Goods and Services Tax (GST) only, but boats, camper vans and motor homes will attract tariff duties as well as GST when they are brought in.

For your vehicle to qualify for free Goods and Services Tax you must have owned and used the vehicle for at least 12 months prior to your move. Once your vehicle has been successfully imported into the country you cannot sell it for a further 2 years.

What can I do with the things I can’t take?

If you can’t find a good home for the goods that you are leaving behind, Robinsons offer first-class secure storage facilities that you can take advantage of.

What documents will I need?

You will need documents that prove that your personal goods qualify for concessional entry; otherwise you will be liable for GST, and possibly duty charges too. Documents such as your passport, and work visa, are necessary, and if applicable, you’ll also need to present student visas, transit visas, and Special category of work visas, amongst others. If you need help with your documentation, our team of experts can help you get everything in order.

How long will it take to ship my possessions?

For a Full Container Load, you should allow a door-to-door transit time of 6-8 weeks.

A Shared Container Shipment – known as groupage – will be cheaper, but will take longer: usually 10-12 weeks door-to-door.

What about insurance?

Make sure to check that all your Inventory items are covered for everything from minor breakages to the ship sinking! Remember to consider replacement values for your items in the country you are moving to, and not the country you’re moving from, as you’ll have to replace damaged goods in your final location.
